Pet C-Section recovery, day by day
Day 0
Post-Surgery
- Your pet will be groggy from anesthesia. Keep them confined in a warm, quiet space.
- Monitor the mother AND puppies/kittens closely. Ensure nursing is happening.
- Light meal of bland food, boiled chicken and rice when alert
- E-collar on at all times. Give pain medication as directed.
Days 1-3
Monitoring
- Ensure mother is feeding and caring for newborns
- Check incision twice daily
- Activity restriction: leash walks for bathroom only
- Continue all medications on schedule
Days 4-14
Recovery
- Continue gentle activity restriction
- Incision should be improving each day
- Suture check and removal at 10-14 days
- Gradually increase activity as tolerated
When to call your provider or 911
- •Call your care team today if you notice: Excessive bleeding from the incision that doesn't stop
- •Call your care team today if you notice: Incision opens, separates, or has pus/foul odor
- •Call your care team today if you notice: Your pet is extremely lethargic or unresponsive
- •Call your care team today if you notice: Persistent vomiting or diarrhea for more than 12 hours
- •Call 911 now if you notice: Difficulty breathing or blue/pale gums
- •Call your care team today if you notice: Refusal to eat or drink for more than 24 hours after surgery
- •Call your care team today if you notice: Collapse or inability to stand
- •Call your care team today if you notice: Mother ignoring or aggressing towards newborns
- •Call your care team today if you notice: Newborn not nursing within 2 hours of birth
When in doubt, call your clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911.
